What is Brain Gym®?
Brain Gym® is an educational, movement based program which uses simple movements to integrate the whole brain, senses and body, preparing the person with the physical skills they need to learn effectively. It is based on the principle that moving with intention, leads to optimal learning.
Think of what it was like when you first started learning to drive – how difficult it was to co-ordinate the movements of feet on the pedals while observing the road, thinking about where you had to go, listening to the instructor. This is what our bodies and brains have to go through whenever we are in a new learning situation.
Brain Gym® can assist by improving academic ability with children, teenagers and adults by enhancing:
Concentration and focus
Cognitive functions
Comprehension
Reading and writing
Maths and numeracy
Behavioural issues
Confidence
Physical co-ordination
Public Speaking
There are 26 specific movements and physical exercises which prepare the brain and entire nervous system for optimal learning. Brain Gym® is different because the learning model addresses the physical (rather than mental) components of learning. The philosophy is that “Learning is not only in the head”.
To learn effectively our body and brain have to communicate with each other. The muscles have to work in a relaxed way so that the physical aspects that take place during learning such as writing, reading (speech), listening, seeing, touching can all occur without undue stress on the body to perform those movements.
Brain Gym® is the movement program which forms the foundation of the Educational Kinesiology modality. Brain Gym® is a drug free, simple and a highly effective program practiced worldwide.
Brain Gym® movements stimulate nerve pathways between the brain and body and help to develop gross and fine motor movements, sharpen cognitive skills, eye teaming, auditory discrimination, proprioception and sensory integration.
History of Brain Gym®
Brain Gym® Founder, Paul E. Dennison, in 1981 was a remedial education specialist, who ran remedial group learning centres in California. He specialised in assisting children with learning difficulties such as learning to read.
In developing Brain Gym®, Paul Dennison drew from a wide range of work in the fields of education, developmental vision and personal development. His work was based on an understanding of the links between physical movement, language acquisition and academic achievement. Brain Gym® is a movement program that prepares students of all ages to practice and master the skills required for the mechanics of learning.
